– In ancient times there were many fortresses in Khorezm Oasis to such an extent that not without reason was now called “Ellikkala”, which means “50 fortresses”.
– Toprakkala: the first capital of Khorezm which means “Clay Fortress”, where the first examples of plans of city was found, which proves the existence of statehood of the 4th century A.C.. In addition, this place is very important because it was here that the first written sources of Khorezm, a calendar and plaster statuettes of singers were found.
– Kizilkala: along the way visit one of the garrison fortresses of this Oasis. By the reason of the color of the clay, it became known as the “Red Fortress”.
– Ayazkala: one of the more important oasis fortresses which consists of 3 parts. Fortresses were built around the perimeter of the oasis borders to protect against the raids of nomads from the north. This fortress is one of the most remote but one of the most well-organized and protected fortresses. Name of fortress means “Severe Frost Fortress”. You can understand why it was so called only by visiting in winter, because the cold of the steppe is one of the most terrible colds.
